Selecting the BEST RENTER'S INSURANCE

Renter's Insurance Can Be a Really Good Deal
Renter's Insurance covers damage or loss to personal property caused by theft, vandalism, most water damage, fire or smoke, credit card fraud, and other named peril. It is relatively inexpensive compared to Homeowners Insurance, and the application process is simpler and quicker than is the case for Homeowners Insurance. Most insurance carriers who write Homeowners Insurance policies can also write Renters Insurance as well.

Why Do Most Renters Avoid Insurance?
When I think of Renter's Insurance, I think of Jim Carey and Jeff Bridges in the movie, Dumb and Dumber. If ever a pair of apartment mates needed insurance against accidental catastrophe, those two guys did. But of course they wouldn't have thought to purchase it, I'm sure. Renter's Insurance is not required by law, as is auto insurance, or by a mortgage contract, as is home insurance. Maybe that's why most young people, who by and large rent, seem oblivious to its existence. That's a shame. A renters policy can insure for the loss of personal property based on the replacement value of an item, figured at the cost of a new item of the same original quality. Since many renters seem to furnish their flats with castoff, second hand thrift store type junk, if they ever need to file a claim they may find themselves getting compensated quite generously. Of course, this happens with Homeowners Insurance, too.

Tips for Renters with Insurance
If you have Renter's Insurance coverage, you will want to document your possessions in case of future loss or damage. (The same goes for Homeowners as well.) This will assist you in filing a claim should the need arise. Take photographs, save your sales receipts, warranty cards, etc. Put them in a secure place. If a loss occurs, take photographs of the damage if you can, and save these to show the adjuster as well. And don't be afraid to file a claim.
